CBI: Where were you born and raised?
CARLOS: I was born in Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, 1972. Tropical and happy childhood, watching many Hanna-Barbera, Filmation and MGM cartoons. I have a twin brother who also reads Marvel and DC Comics, during childhood and today, read underground comics.
CBI: Tell CBI about yourself…
CARLOS: I'm a big fan of the Age of Bronze of Marvel and DC. I have some tough times with the artists of today, with the strange anatomy and perspective. Exist some who call me attention. I like to experiment with various styles of drawing. I like the B-movie genre, the producers like Empire/Full Moon, Asylum Films, Troma, Coffin Joe, Roger Corman ... I have two beautiful children, my boys Gabriel and Raphael, I’m married to Maria José, do not drink, do not smoke, I like to work out at the academy... I think it's just ... ah, ah, ah...
CBI: How long have you been drawing comics?
CARLOS: Beginning in 1989/90, I was published in the fanzine “Ponto de Fuga”, produced in university, a UFRJ. After, I was published several other fanzines. The styles are Science Fiction, Terror, Mangá, miscellaneous stories. Professionally, I started in 1996, drawing cartoons for the magazine Coquetel, of Ediouro Publishing, after, went to Universal Publishing in 2000, creating illustrations for journals, books, letter-papers, etc…
CBI: How did you break into the industry drawing comic books?
CARLOS: In 1999, I won Honorable Mention at the Salon of Comics & Cartoon of Moura, in Portugal. His most important works were published in Brazillian indie antologies, like Historieta, Impacto-Fabricado no Brasil, La Bouche du Monde (France),Quadrix, Almanaque Meteoro,Prismarte.. I began teaching comics, in 2001, in Petrobras Child project, of Non-Governmental Organization. I teach in Public schools, for teens.
In 2002, was published by Escala Graphic Talents, of Editora Escala, my own-comic-book hero, Lobo Guará. This character resurfaced in my Excelsior Webcomics, for USA, with the American name of “Knight Wolf”.
In 2003, I drew illustrations for RPG books for Mongoose Publishing, Elemental Lands and Goodman Games.
In the USA, I drew comic-books: Paladins and Death Squad, for Argo Comics; Archers Team, for Chameleon Studio and Satan’s Faws, for Chiaemera Comics (theses last 2 companies din’t pay me for my services…) and covers for Nuclea, Wyldfire and D-Frost, for Twelve Comics.
CBI: Do you have any formal art training?
CARLOS: Basically, I participated in workshops of Propaganda Illustration and Cartoons.

CBI: How do you focus when drawing?
CARLOS: I see references, study others artists and narratives, designs. After, I started drawing on a sheet of layout paper, in A4 or A3 format. Then used a light table to pass the pencil drawing to a new sheet of paper, for art to be clean and good finish. I just draw in pencil because I'm not good make inks.
CBI: What types of technology do you use to draw?
CARLOS: I use the old good techniques…paper, pencils, rubber eraser and reference books. But, I use Photoshop programs for working with pencils, when sending digital archives and not to original for inker; via e-mail I use Photoshop also.

CARLOS: I don’t remember with certain… but, I remember the firsts…
Captain America # 117/1969and Thor # 171/1969 (in Brazil, these stories are published as Capitão América # 4/1980)…
Detective Comics# 400(in Brazil, Batman-3ºsérie # 19/1971), 402(in Brazil,Batman-3º serie # 21/1971),407/1970/1971 (in Brazil,Batman-3º serie # 25/1971)……

CBI: Do you read any of the new comic books that are being published today? If so, which ones?
CARLOS: Project: Superpowers, The Black Terror, Green Hornet, Vampirella, Secret Avengers..
CBI: Print vs. Digital. Your thoughts…
CARLOS: One helps the other, if the author knows to take advantage of it. However, I believe that to really long sagas, like Watchmen, can be tiring. You can read slowly, and after, buy the printed version is better. This way I believe works. That's what I try to do in Excelsior Webcomics.

CARLOS: Photo references, dramatic expressions of face and body.
CBI: What other mediums or genres have you drawn for?
CARLOS: I draw in various styles… terror, SF ,humor, cartoon, super-hero, manga style..I try to be very versatile ... and like to experiment with styles.
CBI: What project are you currently working on at now?
CARLOS: Besides Eco Teen, I am also editor of the comics project Excelsior Webcomics, editing Taanda, Wonderman, The Black Bat, Regan Rip-Powerman and my personal projects, Knight Wolf and City of Dreams.
I currently working in "City of Dreams", its a 5 part mini-series, created by me and writer Ron Fortier (Green Hornet, Terminator and Moonstone comic-books today), featuring 28 Golden Age super heroes that are all in public domain. Is an epic, with political conspiracy, retro-futurism and alternative reality.
CBI: What future projects do you have in the works?
CARLOS: Ending with "City of Dreams", drawing a new story for Knight Wolf and editing comic adaptations of movies in Excelsior Webcomics.
CBI: Do you have any words for aspiring artists?
CARLOS: Train and train a lot, listen to more experienced artists at conventions, show your portfolios and take advantage of opportunities, whether small or large.
CBI: How can fans and publishers get a hold of you?
CARLOS: Contact me at:
[email protected]
It's great and cool when an old fan of the Golden Age contacted me for an exchange of ideas. It has been very productive creatively and to learn more about my audience.
CBI: Carlos, CBI appreciates your time. All the best.
CARLOS: I am very grateful for that opportunity. It's always good to have a space to present my opinion and talk about projects.
