Interview with...
MICHAEL LAGACE
Creator Michael Lagace & The Forever Maps...
JMH: What is The Forever Maps?
MICHAEL: The Forever Maps is a graphic novel about a man who finds a way to live forever, but also finds that it takes a lot more from him than he expected. When he comes into possession of a map, he finds that it leads him to another map, and another, and another. And so long as he follows them, he doesn't get older. Several decades later, that's when he realizes that when he stops following them, his age quickly catches up with him.
JMH: Can you describe the world/universe it’s from?
MICHAEL: It's set in perhaps the strangest world of all, ours. The first chapter begins in 1794, and by the end, it's caught up to modern times.
JMH: Does The Forever Maps have supporting characters and if so can you tell CBI about them?
MICHAEL: The story revolves around John, who leaves home to get away from his abusive father, but also leaves behind his loving mother who always protected him. John receives a map from a rambling old kook in the first chapter. In the second, we meet John's girlfriend, and in the third chapter, we are also introduced to his son, William. And then there's a minor twist character at the end, so I'm afraid I can't tell you more about that.
JMH: Was The Forever Maps inspired by anything from your past or real life experiences?
MICHAEL: It was mostly inspired by late night musings about living forever and how much that would cost. To me, mortality is a moving theme in storytelling, at least as moving as life is.
JMH: Do your stories carry a message to the readers?
MICHAEL: I certainly hope so. The biggest idea I tried to address in the story is that if we focus on one thing in life, we can miss out on everything. I suppose it's a warning, and perhaps to myself most of all.
JMH: Talk about the creative team involved with The Forever Maps…
MICHAEL: Well, my name is Michael Lagacé, and I've been writing as long as I could hold a pen, although I hope my legibility has improved since then. I've been published in some poetry magazines and I won a couple literary contests, but this is my first actual venture to make a comic since high school. The artist on The Forever Maps is Todor Hristov has been published in a variety of things, like Off-Registration magazine and a recent anthology on Vikings by Black Jack Press. He's a young guy from Bulgaria and he's doing some incredible work, really outstanding, and he's only getting better. There are some scenes in this comic that are going to blow you away, seriously.
JMH: Will The Forever Maps be released in digital format, web comic, or print?
MICHAEL: The Kickstarter campaign right now will allow us to release the book in digital format but also to print a beautiful trade paperback. We're going to include a lot of bonus material in the printed book, but I'm sure we'll put some awesome extras into the digital release too. At the end of the day, we want all our backers and readers to be satisfied.
JMH: Where can readers get a hold of The Forever Maps?
Our campaign is running until April 25th! We've priced a digital version of the final printed book at only ten dollars. After that, I'm sure we'll be getting it onto Comixology and anywhere we can to make it as accessible possible.
JMH: How can fans contact you?
MICHAEL: The shortlink to our page is http://kck.st/1xBpV5q but to get ahold of me, and check out some totally free comics and more, my personal web site is www.mrlagace.com.
JMH: What advice do you have for anyone thinking about going the Kickstarter route for their property?
MICHAEL: Research. Plan. Make sure you aren't short-changing yourself, make sure you're giving good value to
