Steve Rude’s career began in 1981 with his and co-creator Mike Baron’s groundbreaking “Nexus” comic series. From there, he never looked back. Steve was gracious to answer a few questions from CBI publisher John Michael Helmer…

JMH: Where were you born and raised?

STEVE: I was born and raised in Madison, WI., until the age of 13.  Then off to Waukesha, WI.  Then from ‘72 to '75 in Escanaba, MI.

JMH: Tell CBI about yourself…

STEVE: I'm tall, used to be very thin, intense, driven personality, have always liked animals. 

JMH: How long have you been drawing comics?

STEVE: Since 1978 with various friends, then professionally with Mike Baron on Nexus (1981)

JMH: How did you break into the industry drawing comic books?

STEVE: Perseverance.

JMH: Do you have any formal art training?

STEVE: Yes, many years of it.  I still go back to attend various workshops and sketch classes to keep my skills sharp, as well as practicing daily in my sketchbooks.

JMH: Who are your artistic influences?

STEVE: Jack Kirby and Alex Raymond in comics, and Andrew Loomis, Harry Anderson, and John Gannam in magazine illustration.

JMH: How do you focus when drawing?

STEVE: Very intently.

JMH: What types of technology do you use to draw?

STEVE: An H-B pencil and #6 brushes.  That's as tech as I get.
